The Illinois Innovation Venture Fund (INVENT) is a $114 million direct equity capital program funded through the U.S. Department of the Treasury State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) and administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).

Peoria NEXT will be hosting INVENT on December 7th for an event to kick off an initiative with Distillery Labs, the Turner Center for Entrepreneurship, and Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Bradley University focused on keeping and creating more innovative startups in Greater Peoria through the State's new equity investment matching program (i.e., INVENT).  In short, Illinois INVENT will match a local private investment in startups ($10k - $6m per company), but only after private investors are committed.

Stated another way, if someone chooses to invest $100k in a Greater Peoria startup, Illinois INVENT will also put in $100k at the same terms.  That investor's decision not only supports the local economy, but it forces the State to Choose Greater Peoria.

Topics covered:

Overview of Illinois INVENT.
How Illinois INVENT supports startups in Illinois.
Impact funding has on local innovation.
Presentations from select 3-4 scalable startups from Central Illinois.
Each startup presents its innovative idea, market potential, and impact. (Plus Q&A)
Information regarding application for entrepreneurs to present at future INVENT visit.
Guidance on navigating the world of venture funding in Central Illinois.
Interactive roundtable session focusing on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in Peoria.

The Turner Center for Entrepreneurship and Illinois APEX Accelerator at Bradley University is offering this webinar at no cost to participants to learn the benefits of having an operating agreement along with what the Do’s and Don’ts are. This webinar will show entrepreneurs how to structure their LLC to achieve any desired business scenario. A properly executed Operating Agreement can help ensure economic expectations are clearly established and effective in practice. An Operating Agreement should make clear what authority the managers or members have in relation to the operation of the business. Therefore, the Operating Agreement should provide clarity so everyone’s expectations are on the table going into a business and the likelihood of misunderstandings or future disputes are reduced. Co-sponsors:  Illinois SBDC; Minority Business Development Center, Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center, and Greater Peoria EDC. Registration information will be shared with training partners.

Discussion Points:
When to choose an LLC as your business entity
Member managed vs manager managed
Specify what authority members/managers have
How to address deadlocks
Address how the decisions and authority of multiple managers should be handled
Understanding the difference between allocations and distributions

Who should attend:
The topics will target a spectrum of people from those who have an idea, to those making the leap and ready to start all the way through those who are already formed and want to make sure they are following the proper guidelines to keep themselves and their business protected and moving forward on the best path.

Take away:
This training will provide the framework that will enable your business to grow and thrive if you are choosing to do business as an LLC and ensure that an LLC is the right choice for the success of your venture. Having a properly drafted operating agreement is critical as it provides a solid foundation for your business, governing everything from management to economic expectations to the very purpose of the business itself.

The Turner Center for Entrepreneurship and Illinois APEX Accelerator at Bradley University is offering this webinar at no cost to participants to help you keep YOUR business government compliant.

From investors to employees to customers, there are a lot of people who can influence your business. Most of the time these relationships improve your business, but sometimes these influences can increase risk for your company. In this session we’ll be discussing risks posed by foreign ownership, control, or influence (FOCI). A company can be subject to FOCI in various ways and FOCI can have a wide range of consequences. FOCI can affect your ability to obtain government contracts, lead to a loss of key personnel, or provide a vector for unwanted technology transfer. This session will cover the basics of understanding FOCI and how to begin to address FOCI risks.

Speaker:
Dr. Bryson Reynolds is the Associate Director for Small Business Risk in the Department of Defense’s Office of Small Business Programs (OSBP). Dr. Reynolds oversees efforts to address foreign, ownership, control, and influence (FOCI) risk to small businesses in the defense industrial base, and to expand market intelligence tools through the Market Research Center of Excellence (MRCOE). Prior to joining DoD OSBP, Dr. Reynolds worked in neuroscience research at the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University and in STEM education at the Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach.
